updated

.

I've had a post rolling around in my head for a while now. It was about babies and how wonderful they are and how amazing Cashew is and how different it is this time around and etc etc. And it was all emotional too about postpartum depression and how I had it with the Little One and it totally sucked and having Cashew has really shown me just how joyful new life can be. But it was taking WAY too long to write and I wasn't posting anything else because I wanted to get this post up. And then Dooce went and wrote it for me and I don't need to say anything more. I didn't have quite the experience that she did, but she sums it up pretty good. So there. Mischief managed. Resume blogging.

And did you know that today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day? Y'arrrr!

remembering (and forgetting)

We're finding that there are a whole slew of things that, due to some sort of gift of evolution, we had forgotten about having a newborn. (If we remembered these things, we'd certainly not be as successful in maintaining the human race, as most people wouldn't have more than one child.)

  • Lack of sleep? Totally sucks. Going into it, you know that newborns don't sleep good but you don't actually remember how much it sucks until you go through it again.
  • Babies poop. A LOT. I had totally forgotten how much time I spend at the changing table and washing/drying/folding diapers.
  • Breastmilk leakage. (Don't think I need to explain that one.)
  • On the same note, breastmilk smells bad when it comes back up. And babies puke almost as much as they poop.
  • Family members who want to help but haven't had a baby around for 30 years aren't much help, unfortunately.
  • Labor and delivery? Hurts.
That said, I had also forgotten the overwhelming emotion that I get when I wake up in the morning and find Cashew wedged in the crook of my arm, sleeping soundly, completely unsure of how she got there but there nonetheless there and asleep and beautiful and perfect in every way. And all those bullet points up there? Forgotten once again.

things I learned today...

  • Getting really excited about getting free tickets to see David Sedaris makes you feel old.
  • But not as old as when you realize just how bummed you are that you didn't get the tickets.
  • Leaving a two-year old alone in the living room with crayons and a coloring book is a good way to buy some time to cook dinner.
  • When a two-year-old is alone in the living room with crayons and a coloring book and things get very quiet, trouble is afoot.
  • Thankfully, washable crayons are indeed washable.
  • When you have a craving for an iceberg lettuce salad with ranch dressing, greenleaf lettuce and Whole Foods ranch dressing doesn't cut it.
  • Whole Foods ranch dressing is a poor excuse for ranch.
  • New 90210? Horrible excuse for a show.
  • Apparently now anytime someone mentions lipstick, it is a direct attack on Sarah Palin. (Except when a republican says it, of course.)
  • Lance Armstrong is one crazy guy.
  • I should never have introduced my co-workers to IM.

What did you learn today?

i can't wait for the kenny g

.
My parents were never hip. They didn't have friends, they didn't go to shows, they didn't drink beer. There was no record player and no dancing. There were suits and ties. There were businesses and stability and "the smart thing to do."

I've got to imagine that they were kids at some point. That they weren't always so... adult-ish.

When does the transformation occur? Is it a quick overnight change? Am I going to be wearing indie-rock tee-shirts one day and blouses with brooches the next? Or is it more of a gradual shift, and one day five years from now I'm going to be wondering why I even bothered downloading John in the morning, when it's much easier to listen to the new Kenny G CD?

Or were they secretly hip? Maybe after I went to sleep they'd bust out the vinyl and drink a bottle of red wine on the back patio. Maybe mom really slept in a vintage Doors concert tee but then put on full-length nightgowns when I came into the room.

Now I'm not sayin' that we're crazy cool hipster cats, but we do like to enjoy a beverage or two, and we have been known to go see some live music. Although we are also complaining about our neighbor's loud music, and B started reminiscing about how when he was little, you could get gumballs for a penny. Crap - there's no turning back now. Bring on the Kenny G.
